The legal frame, no sugarcoating
- The clean route: the remote worker KITAS (E33G). One year renewable, legal residence, designed precisely for people working for an employer or clients outside Indonesia (documented annual income around 60,000 dollars required). Details in our visa guide.
- The acknowledged gray zone: many nomads chain VOA and C1 visas while quietly working for abroad. In practice it is tolerated as long as the activity stays 100 percent foreign-facing, but it is tolerance, not a right.
- The red line, unambiguous: serving Indonesian clients, invoicing in rupiah, or taking local employment without a work permit. Enforcement has hardened and deportations are real.

Plan on 100 to 180 dollars per month for unlimited access, with call booths, coffee and often a pool. Most also sell day and week passes to test before committing.
Internet and power: the ground truth
- Fiber covers the expat zones at 50 to 300 Mbps. Check the line BEFORE signing a villa: the next street over may not be connected.
- Local 4G/5G (Telkomsel first, XL as backup) is your safety net: an eSIM with a big data plan costs a few dollars and saves your video calls.
- Power cuts happen, brief but real. Serious independents run the trio: power bank, tethering, and a fallback coworking ten minutes away.
The timezone, your best ally
Bali runs on GMT+8: when it is 9 am in Paris, it is 3 pm on the island. In practice: free mornings for surf, training or deep work, then your European meetings from 3 pm to 9 pm. With the US West Coast, Balinese mornings make the overlap. The only true pain: New York office hours, which land in the middle of your night.
