Central Ubud, Penestanan, Sayan or Pengosekan: what each area is like, who it suits, and where to book.

Central Ubud for a first visit, because you can walk to almost everything. Penestanan for a longer, quieter stay still within reach on foot. Sayan for valley views and hotel comfort. Pengosekan if you want rice fields without being far out.

The market, the palace, the Monkey Forest and most of the restaurants sit within a few streets of each other. Staying here means you can arrive without a plan and still fill a week on foot.
Skip it if: you are sensitive to traffic: the main streets are narrow and busy from mid-morning onwards.
On the hillside west of the centre, reached by a long flight of steps or a loop by road. Cafés, studios and long-stay guesthouses, with a much quieter evening than the town below.
Skip it if: you have heavy luggage or trouble with stairs: the shortcut is a staircase, and the road route is far longer.
Above the Ayung river, where most of the well-known valley hotels sit. You come here for the view and the calm, and you accept that every meal outside the hotel means a drive.
Skip it if: you want to walk to dinner.
South of the centre, past the Monkey Forest. Rice fields start almost immediately, but you are still close enough to reach town on foot if you do not mind the walk, and in minutes by scooter.
Skip it if: you want nightlife on your doorstep.
Three to four nights covers the town, the rice terraces and one or two temples without rushing. People who come for yoga, courses or work routinely stay weeks.
The centre is, and that is its main advantage over the coast. Outside the centre the roads narrow quickly and pavements disappear, so most visitors use a scooter or arrange a driver for anything further out.
Ubud is inland, greener and quieter, and suits culture, walking and slower days. Canggu is on the coast, younger and surf-oriented. Many visitors split their stay between the two rather than choosing.
Usually between an hour and a half and two hours by car, and longer in the afternoon. Book a transfer in advance if you land late.
