The centre of gravity of Canggu. Cafés, surf shops, warungs and bars line one long street running down to the beach, and most of what people picture when they say Canggu happens within a few hundred metres. You can live here without a scooter, which is rare on this coast.
Skip it if: you want quiet evenings, or you are sensitive to traffic noise and construction.
Wider streets, newer buildings, international coffee shops and the biggest beach clubs on this stretch of coast. It feels less like a village than Batu Bolong and more like a resort district that grew fast. The most common landing spot for remote workers who want comfort over character.
Skip it if: you came to Bali looking for something that feels distinctly Balinese.
The surf is the reason people stay here, and the crowd reflects it: experienced surfers, long-term residents, and visitors who would rather watch the sunset from the sand than from a day bed. Quieter after dark than Batu Bolong, with fewer places to eat within walking distance.
Skip it if: you do not surf and you want nightlife on your doorstep.
Just north of Canggu proper, and noticeably calmer. Rice fields still break up the streets, mornings are quiet enough to walk or cycle, and a handful of good restaurants have opened without the density of the areas below. The usual choice for people staying weeks rather than days.
Skip it if: you want to be in the middle of things without using a scooter.

One of the few genuinely beachfront hotels on this part of the coast, at the Echo Beach end. Useful if you want to be on the sand without giving up hotel service, and close enough to walk into Batu Bolong when you want noise.

Batu Bolong. It puts you within walking distance of the beach, the cafés and most of the restaurants, so you can get your bearings before deciding whether you prefer the polish of Berawa or the quiet of Pererenan.
Parts of it are. Batu Bolong and the main beach road work on foot. Moving between neighbourhoods, for example from Berawa to Echo Beach, is another matter: the distances are short on a map but the roads are narrow, busy and have no pavement in many places. Most visitors end up using a scooter or a driver.
Usually somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half by car, and longer in the late afternoon. Traffic on this route varies far more than the distance suggests, so plan generously for an early flight.
Seminyak is more built up, with more shopping, more restaurants and easier access to the airport. Canggu is younger, more surf-oriented and more spread out. If you want to walk to a beach club and a spa on the same evening, Seminyak is simpler.
