Kuta, Legian or Tuban: Bali's original tourist strip, who each part suits, and where to book.

Quick answer

Kuta for the lowest prices, the busiest nightlife and the shortest transfer from the airport. Legian, just north, for the same beach with noticeably less noise. Tuban, to the south, for families and the shortest possible airport run.

02 / Areas

The areas, one by one

Kuta

Bali's original tourist strip: dense, cheap and loud, with a wide beach known for its gentle beginner surf breaks and its sunsets. What it lacks in polish it makes up for in choice and in price.

Skip it if: you want calm or a refined atmosphere.

Legian

The direct continuation of Kuta beach heading north, with a similar range of hotels and restaurants but a noticeably quieter evening once you move a street or two back from the main road.

Skip it if: you want to be right in the middle of the nightlife.

Tuban

South of Kuta, hard against the airport fence, with a calmer stretch of beach and a concentration of family-oriented hotels. The trade-off for quiet is aircraft noise on the approach path.

Skip it if: you are sensitive to aircraft noise.

Surf

  • Kuta Beach · Kuta — Sand bottom and gentle, consistent waves: the usual beach for a first surf lesson anywhere on the island.

Villas

  • Whole villas · Kuta and Legian — Fewer villas here than further north: this stretch is dominated by hotels, which suits the shorter, arrival-and-departure stays it is mostly used for.

05 / Questions

Frequently asked

Is Kuta safe?

As safe as any busy tourist area, with the usual precautions: watch belongings on the beach and in crowded nightlife streets, and use the same care with a scooter that applies anywhere in Bali.

Kuta or Canggu?

Kuta is cheaper, closer to the airport and rougher around the edges. Canggu is further, pricier and built around cafés and surf culture rather than nightlife.

Is Kuta good for beginner surfers?

Yes, arguably the best on the island for it: a wide, sandy-bottomed beach with small, forgiving waves and the highest concentration of surf schools.

How far is Kuta from the airport?

Usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car, and Tuban, at the southern end, is closer still.
