Cliffs, famous breaks and the temple at the tip of the peninsula. Beaches here are reached by steps cut into the rock, which is part of the appeal and part of the daily effort.
Skip it if: you want to walk between places: everything is a drive apart.
A cluster of guesthouses and warungs above a small beach, reached on foot down a steep path. Popular with surfers who stay for weeks rather than days.
Skip it if: you have mobility constraints or a lot of luggage.
Less developed than its neighbours, with a long stretch of sand and a handful of places to stay. A reasonable base if you want the Bukit without the crowds of Uluwatu.
Skip it if: you want choice in restaurants.
A sheltered bay on the east side of the peninsula, with the calmest swimming of the four and the shortest drive to the airport. The seafood grills on the sand are the local ritual.
Skip it if: you came for surf.
Not really. The reef breaks around Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin are for experienced surfers. Beginners are usually better served by the beach breaks further north, around Canggu, Kuta or Legian.
Or a driver, yes. The Bukit is spread out, distances between beaches are real, and there is no walkable centre in the way there is in Canggu or Ubud.
Usually forty-five minutes to an hour and a quarter by car, which makes it one of the easier areas to reach on arrival.
Uluwatu is about cliffs, serious surf and space between places. Canggu is denser, younger and easier without a vehicle. Uluwatu rewards you if you are happy to drive.
