The areas, one by one

Oberoi

Jalan Kayu Aya, still widely called Eat Street, concentrates most of the restaurants and boutiques in one stretch, with the beach at the end of it. The most convenient base in Seminyak if you intend to walk.

Skip it if: you want quiet: this is the busiest part of the area.

Petitenget

North of Oberoi, with the larger beach clubs, several of the better known hotels and a slightly more spread-out feel. A good compromise between being in the middle of things and sleeping well.

Skip it if: you are counting every rupiah: this is the pricier end.

Double Six

The southern edge, where Seminyak meets Legian. Prices drop noticeably, the beach is wide and the sunset crowd gathers every evening. Less polished, closer to the airport.

Skip it if: you want a refined atmosphere.

Kerobokan

Inland from Seminyak, where villas get bigger and cheaper for the same money. It works well if you are travelling as a group and were going to hire a driver anyway.

Skip it if: you wanted to walk to the beach.

05 / Questions

Frequently asked

Seminyak or Canggu?

Seminyak is more built up, with more restaurants and shops, and it is closer to the airport. Canggu is younger, more surf-oriented and more spread out. If walking to dinner matters to you, Seminyak is the simpler choice.

Can you swim at Seminyak beach?

People do, but this is an open ocean beach with waves and currents, not a sheltered bay. Pay attention to the flags and to where the lifeguards are, and treat the sea with more caution than you would in a calm bay such as Sanur or Nusa Dua.

How far is Seminyak from the airport?

Usually thirty minutes to an hour by car, depending on traffic and on which end of Seminyak you are staying in.

Is Seminyak walkable?

Within each area, yes. Between areas it is manageable but not always pleasant: pavements are uneven or missing in places and the main road is busy.
