The areas, one by one
Seminyak
More built up than Canggu, with the widest choice of restaurants and shops and the shortest drive from the airport of the west coast options. See the Seminyak areas.

Ubud

Far up the north-east coast, black sand and diving, with far fewer visitors than the south. A long drive from the airport, which is precisely why it stays quiet. See the Amed areas.

Sidemen

Where should I stay in Bali for a first visit?
Split the trip. Four or five nights on the west coast, in Canggu or Seminyak, then three or four inland in Ubud. It covers the two faces of the island without long daily drives, and it is the pattern most first-time itineraries end up following.
Is it better to stay in one place or move around?
Two bases for a week or ten days, three at most for two weeks. Bali looks small on a map, but road speeds are low and transfers routinely take twice as long as the distance suggests.
Which part of Bali has the calmest water?
The east and south-east: Sanur and Nusa Dua both sit behind reefs, which makes them the usual choice for families with young children. The west coast beaches, from Seminyak to Canggu, face open ocean with waves and currents.
How long does it take to get between areas?
Allow around an hour and a half between the west coast and Ubud, and about the same between Ubud and Uluwatu, more in the late afternoon. Anything on the north or east coast, such as Amed, is a half-day drive.
