Toyapakeh, near the harbour, for the widest choice of stays and the easiest logistics. Crystal Bay for beach access and snorkelling on the doorstep. The eastern side, near Atuh and Kelingking, has far fewer stays but puts the island's famous viewpoints within reach at sunrise, before the day-trip boats arrive.

Where most of the fast boats from Sanur land, and the widest concentration of guesthouses, warungs and scooter rental on the island. The practical base if you are renting a scooter or joining a driver tour.

A sheltered cove on the west side, with clear water and a small cluster of stays right above the sand. It gets a wave of day-trip boats by mid-morning, and is quiet again by late afternoon.

Home to the cliffs and lookout points that fill Nusa Penida's Instagram feed, Kelingking among them. Far fewer places to stay than Toyapakeh, on rougher roads, but staying nearby means reaching the viewpoints before the day-trip crowds.
Skip it if: you are uneasy on unpaved roads, or you want a wide choice of restaurants in the evening.

Both are common, but staying at least one night lets you reach Kelingking and the eastern viewpoints before the day-trip boats arrive mid-morning, when the car parks and viewing platforms are at their busiest.
By fast boat from Sanur, usually thirty to forty-five minutes. There is no bridge or regular vehicle ferry for visitors.
In places, yes: steep, narrow and unpaved stretches are common, particularly on the way to the eastern viewpoints. Scooter experience matters more here than almost anywhere else on a Bali itinerary.
Nusa Penida is reached from Sanur and known for cliffs and viewpoints rather than nightlife. The Gili Islands, off Lombok, are flatter, car-free and better known for diving and a slower island pace.
