Where to Stay in Pererenan: Which Area Suits You

The beach side, the rice-field side or towards Tumbak Bayuh: Canggu's quieter northern neighbour, who it suits, and where to book.

Quick answer

The beach side, near Pererenan Beach, for cafés and surf within reach on foot. The rice-field side, inland, for the calm that brings most people here in the first place. Towards Tumbak Bayuh, further north, if you want quieter still.

Beach side

The stretch nearest Pererenan Beach itself, where the newer wave of cafés and restaurants that made Pererenan's name have opened. Busier than the rice-field side, and still noticeably calmer than Batu Bolong.

Skip it if: you want the quiet that rice fields are known for here.

Rice fields

Just inland, where rice fields still break up the streets and mornings are quiet enough to walk or cycle. The usual choice for people staying weeks rather than days.

Skip it if: you want to walk to dinner without a scooter.

Tumbak Bayuh

North again, where the pattern continues: fewer businesses, more rice, and villas built for people who specifically wanted distance from Canggu's centre rather than proximity to it.

Skip it if: you want any kind of restaurant scene within walking distance.

05 / Questions

Frequently asked

Pererenan or Canggu?

Pererenan is the quieter, more residential northern edge of the same stretch of coast. Canggu proper, meaning Batu Bolong and Berawa, has more restaurants, more energy and more nightlife within walking distance.

Is Pererenan walkable?

The beach side works on foot for cafés and the surf break. The rice-field side and anything towards Tumbak Bayuh generally require a scooter.

Is Pererenan good for surfing?

Yes: Pererenan Beach has its own break, less crowded than Echo Beach or Batu Bolong, and is one of the reasons the area has grown.

How far is Pererenan from the airport?

Usually fifty minutes to an hour and a quarter by car, similar to central Canggu, slightly longer in heavy traffic.
