Quick answer
A whole villa with a pool usually beats a hotel room from three people up, and often from two in the quieter areas. Canggu and Seminyak for walkable surroundings, Ubud for the valley views, Uluwatu for space, Sanur and Nusa Dua for families who want calm water.

Ubud
Villas cut into the valley sides, often with the pool facing the jungle. Most are a drive from the centre. Where to stay in Ubud.
Skip it if: you do not want to depend on a scooter or a driver.
Seminyak
A few streets back from the restaurants, villas cost noticeably less than the hotels they sit behind. The Seminyak areas.

Fewer independent villas than elsewhere, but the calmest swimming on the island and the most predictable standard.

- Staff and service are common · What is usually included — Many villas come with daily cleaning, and some with a cook or a driver. It is often included in the nightly rate rather than charged separately, which changes the comparison with a hotel room.
- Check the distance, not the map · Location — A villa five kilometres from the beach can be twenty minutes away in the afternoon. Roads here are narrow and slow, and that is the single thing photographs never show.
- Pool safety · Families — Private pools are rarely fenced in Bali. If you travel with small children, it is worth asking before booking rather than after arriving.

Is a villa cheaper than a hotel in Bali?
From three people, usually yes, and the gap widens with the size of the group. For one or two travellers a hotel room is often cheaper, unless you are staying several weeks, where monthly villa rates change the picture.
Do villas come with staff?
Often a daily cleaner, sometimes a cook or a driver, and it is usually included rather than extra. Read what the listing includes: it is the part that makes a villa feel different from an apartment.
Which area has the most villas?
Canggu, by a wide margin, followed by Seminyak and Ubud. Uluwatu has fewer but larger ones, and Sanur and Nusa Dua are the quieter family options.
How far ahead should I book?
For July, August and the end-of-year weeks, months ahead: the good villas in the popular areas go early. Outside those periods, a few weeks is usually enough.
